Become a UN Volunteers Programme Officer (UNV PO)
UNV Programme Officer Menchita Caramat (far left), seen here with colleagues from the UNDP Afghanistan New Beginnings Programme. (UNV), is often the only woman on field missions. (UNV)

The objective of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme strategy is to advocate for and integrate volunteerism for peace and development at the global, regional and national levels, and to mobilize UN Volunteers.

As the direct representative of the UNV programme in the field, the UNV PO provides key support for a sustainable and strategic field presence to enable UNV to deliver its mandate. At any given time, UNV has some 80 international UNV POs in the field. The UNV PO normally reports to the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative while working in close collaboration with a Portfolio Manager at UNV headquarters in Bonn. The UNV PO has overall responsibility for project management and developing programmes to promote and enable the contribution of volunteers to various development efforts. Together with the Programme Assistant ) the UNV PO administers UN Volunteers in country and promotes volunteerism amongst partners.

If you are Masters qualified and have at least five years’ experience in the humanitarian, development and/or peace related field in project development and management, and/or previous experience in a civil society setting, volunteer management and/or promotion of volunteerism, an assignment as a UNV PO may be just for you. Although the responsibilities of a UNV PO are not identical in every assignment, you can review the generic UNV PO description of assignment.

Opportunities to contribute volunteerism spirit and professional expertise as a UNV PO arise on a regular basis.

To register as a UN Volunteer, go straight to the registration form.

If you have an interest and the required qualifications and experience for a UNV PO assignment, when you register, please include the reference UNVProgOfficer (no spaces please!) in the ‘additional information’ section of the on-line registration form.
