Lathiif Harvidianto Hairul: Be the best version of yourself

Lathiif Harvidianto Hairul is from Indonesia. He is a UN Volunteer Junior Project Clerk with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in his home country. This is his story.

I serve with the UNDP country office. I use a wheelchair due to my physical disability and require assistance to get from the parking lot to my office on the ninth floor.

My role primarily involves handling operational tasks such as payment processes like tax exemption (VAT), travel and expenses coordination for other agencies, government administrative formalities, asset management, and vehicle registration processes.

Due to my assignment and the quick handling of such paperwork, the number of pending requests decreased significantly in the request database.

Traveling for meetings or missions outside the office can be challenging for me. To overcome this, I often ask my colleagues for assistance when needed.

One of the most memorable moments was when I was acknowledged and presented a trophy as a United Nations Volunteers champion. It was such a pleasant surprise for me and one that I cherish.

Volunteering has given me the courage to believe that despite my disability, I can play a role in addressing development challenges. It’s very empowering to know that I can build my future independently.

Being a UN Volunteer with UNDP has also given me an opportunity to improve my public speaking and time management skills, which are valuable professionally.

I would encourage persons with disabilities to volunteer and give it a try. The United Nations system is equipped to accommodate people with disabilities. It's worth the effort.

My motto is – 'Surpass your limit.' I believe that everyone has the potential to overcome obstacles and strive for greatness, regardless of their circumstances or role models. It's about surpassing our limits and being the best version of ourselves.
