In supporting decent work and economic growth with IOM, I took the lead in youth entrepreneurship and expanded opportunities for young people's skill development. This was an important part of reducing the flow of irregular migration and improving Sierra Leone's economic development.

Success stories
UN Volunteers from China have contributed to UN programmes on poverty reduction, environmental protection, and other areas within China and across the globe. In 2022, 131 Chinese nationals served as UN Volunteers, 25 of whom were fully funded by China.
In 2019, UNV and CYVA signed the first Fully Funded Programme Partnership to facilitate international assignments of UN Volunteers from China.

I have a long history of service that began at a young age. I completed residencies for unaccompanied refugee children and volunteered with CISV, an international youth organization that promotes peace through education.
My previous experiences prepared me well for my UN Volunteer assignments with UNDP in Kosovo, fully funded by Sweden. They played a crucial role in helping me truly understand the challenges people face and the significance of finding solutions to alleviate human suffering.

The journey of Ghita (27) in protection and promotion of refugees’ rights began while she was still in high school. She was selected for an internship in Geneva, Switzerland, where she was introduced to an association active in the promotion of human rights. This experience laid the foundation for her future endeavors to contribute to development and assist refugees and asylum seekers.

In 2022, Mount Kenya University funded three national UN University Volunteer assignments. Brenda Kemunto Onyancha, Jane Wamucii Ngure and Jeremiah Newton Otieno joined the teams of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UN Environment Programme (UNEP), respectively.
The youth volunteers share the valuable experience they have gained in global development, and how their perspectives have changed through their assignments.

Funding partners may choose to sponsor nationals of their own country or those of other nationalities to contribute their skills and talents for peace and development.
UN Volunteers contribute to key UN projects and functions at country and regional level, and address some of the most pressing peace and development challenges around the world.
In 2022, some 736 fully funded UN Volunteers around the world. Of these, 72 per cent were women, 52 per cent were UN Youth and University Volunteers and 12 per cent persons with disabilities.

UNV effectively fulfills its mission of mobilizing volunteers by establishing partnerships with multiple actors, which is vital for ensuring inclusivity. The private sector assumes a pivotal role in facilitating this process.
