Of all the field missions that Camilo Gómez has participated in as a UN Volunteer, one truly left its mark on him. It was in a remote place in Colombia called Mandé, located deep in the jungle in the rural zone of the Urrao municipality, between the Antioquia and Chocó departments.

The UNDP project, Strengthening the Electoral Cycle in the Solomon Islands, supports national authorities to conduct credible and inclusive electoral processes, and is implemented with financial support from the Australian Government. It has the overarching objective of strengthening the link between elections and other key governance processes and institutions contributing to social cohesion and the development of a pluralistic society.

As part of a general thrust for reform and streamlining, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has updated the Conditions of Service for national UN Volunteers, effective globally as of 31 January 2017. The revised Conditions of Service are the outcome of an exhaustive review and extensive consultations with UN partners and UN Volunteers. In their  reformulation, the conditions better suit the changing needs of UN Volunteers, retain UNV as an attractive partner for UN agencies, and streamline volunteer management procedures globally.

Malawi is a country experiencing many challenges in executing its efforts to combat HIV and AIDS.  Nevertheless it is a country on track, making impressive gains against the disease, with UNV doctors among those playing key roles in achieving them.  UNV Doctors have been working in Malawi since 2004, when six were posted there under UNV’s Southern African Capacity Initiative.
