Ban Ki-moon is the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations and held office from January 2007 to December 2016. Please read his statement on the occasion of International Volunteer Day 2024.
On this International Volunteer Day, the global community celebrates and honours the tireless dedication of volunteers worldwide. From addressing multifaceted global crises to supporting individuals in need, volunteerism embodies a spirit of solidarity, resilience, and compassion that our world so deeply needs.
Indeed, in a world striving for sustainable solutions to the challenges we face, volunteers are a vital force; bridging generations to build inclusive progress. Young people, elders, and everyone in between are coming together to meet evolving community needs, uniting experience with fresh energy. I believe this is a powerful blend that is driving meaningful change.
From island nations to mountainous regions, they bring support to the front lines of climate resilience. Across deserts and rainforests, they bridge gaps in food security and foster access to resources. From local neighbourhoods to global initiatives, during peace and conflict, they spark inclusive solutions and advocate for empowerment and justice.
Wherever there is a call for help, volunteers are there, stepping up to protect the most vulnerable. They are champions of humanity and pillars of hope; whose passion and commitment inspire us all.
Today, we celebrate the contributions of the over 13,200 UN Volunteers on the ground, whose efforts play an essential role in accelerating the UN’s guiding efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. Their impact grows daily, fueling our shared mission on behalf of humanity and our planet.
To every volunteer, young and old, thank you for being the beating heart of our collective journey toward a better world for all.
