As the world marks International Women's Day, United Nations agencies based in the Middle East and North Africa call on governments in the region to implement the commitments they have made to gender equality and to ending violence against women and girls.
Under the banner of this year's International Women's Day, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN WOMEN), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) add their voice to a call for a region free from violence against women and girls:
"On this special day, we call upon states to adhere to the commitments they made under all internationally recognized human rights instruments, including the Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child."
