Mr Toily Kurbanov, Deputy Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, will visit Syria, Lebanon and Jordan from 17 to 23 April.
Damascus, Syria. / Mr Kurbanov will meet with United Nations entity partners to discuss the United Nations humanitarian and development response to the crisis in Syria and its impact in the region. While in Lebanon and Jordan, Mr Kurbanov will also meet with some of the 222 UN Volunteers deployed as part of UNV’s Syria crisis response across the region (in Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey and Egypt.)
Mr Kurbanov will explore the potential for collaboration with UN and other partners in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically in engaging youth and enhancing their employability, empowering women, provision of basic social services, and resilience-building work in the country.
“It is never too early to prepare for recovery. UNV is keen to integrate volunteer solutions in Syria, once the situation allows, and investing in youth is key,” Mr Kubanov asserts. “National UN Volunteers embody locally-sourced talent capable of addressing community challenges with locally-owned solutions.”
It is noteworthy that UNV and UN Volunteers have supported United Nations partners in Syria since 1979 through volunteer engagement and development programming.
UNV has a global track record in mobilizing national volunteers, including women and youth, to support sustainable development. UNV is committed to strengthen volunteer initiatives to promote the engagement of national volunteers in recovery and the delivery of basic social services, in cooperation with national and international development partners.
