Milanka Nikolic: Resilience personified
Milanka Nikolic embarked on a deeply unique journey within the United Nations system, serving as a Human Rights Associate with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Serbia from 2021 to 2022. Her story is one of sheer resilience and commitment, enriched with heartfelt emotions.
During her UN Volunteer assignment, Milanka’s main focus was to implement the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy and protect the rights of vulnerable groups. In particular, she conducted media research and prepared social media content.
Milanka uses crutches and often experiences debilitating neuropathic pain. She feels persons with disabilities often face overwhelming pressure and often feel the need to overachieve and are hesitant to seek assistance.
She was wholly dedicated to performing the best she could, guided by a deep sense of honour associated with working for the United Nations. However, deep down, she was constantly grappling with the fear of falling short of expectations. Even though, she endured a considerable amount of physical pain, she refrained from seeking support, driven by concerns about how her colleagues might view her.
Reflecting on this experience, Milanka now thinks she would adopt a different approach. With the knowledge that her colleagues would always do their best to support her, she would not be afraid to say when she was experiencing health challenges.
She emphasizes that to change society for the better, it is necessary to be mentally and physically balanced. Milanka shares her experience with us in the hope that others with disabilities who also aspire to take on a role within the UN system will prioritize their own needs and capabilities over the perpetual pursuit to exceed expectations.
During her time at the UN, Milanka's self-confidence grew, and having been empowered to conduct more research, she felt inspired to continue working in human rights.
On doing the best, she says, “It is of utmost importance for the whole society – and this is how we truly have the chance to change the world for the better.”
After completing her volunteer assignment, Milanka began pursuing a doctorate in media and communications and is working on her own podcast.
