UN Volunteers join COVID-19 response

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is placing strains on health systems and essential public services throughout the world. The World Health Organization has described COVID-19 as an unprecedented threat to our global community.

The full scale and impact of COVID-19 is not yet known. However, what is clear is the need for skilled professionals and civic engagement in the response; particularly in countries where the United Nations is working.

Thriving during COVID-19 lockdown: UN Volunteer writes from Wuhan, China

UN Volunteer Yuqing Xiong from China’s Wuhan, Hubei Province, recounts her firsthand experience during the outbreak of COVID-19. She initially put her thoughts together to share with her fellow citizens from Wuhan, and now she is sharing her experience with the world.

I am glad that at this critical period, I am in Wuhan, together with my parents.

I am not a selfless superheroine fighting against the disease for others, just no more than an ordinary resident in Wuhan. No matter how increasingly serious the situation is or how highly concerned the outsiders are, our lives continue in this homeland.

Since it was confirmed there is a possibility of human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus,  I have been at home - for more than 2 months. Our compound has been strictly blocked for entry.

Becoming a volunteer to mainstream gender equality

For Ekin Su Yilmaz from Turkey, joining UN Women as a UN Youth Volunteer was her life-long dream. Supporting Sustainable Development Goal 5 is part of her day-to-day work, and Ekin shares her experience.

As a young woman, I have always been motivated to create spaces for women to participate in decision making and take on leadership roles. I want to help eliminate barriers to gender equality in my country and region and accelerate achieving 50-50 by 2030 globally. --Ekin Su Yilmaz, UN Youth Volunteer with UN Women, Turkey
